What’s in your pack?
March 6, 2020
Before venturing out on a birdventure it’s important to make sure you’re prepped for the day. Yes, we hope to stop for a baked good for breakfast and finish the day with a brew but a stocked pack is essential for the main event of birdwatching.
Here’s my list:
- bird ID book – I usually just bring 1 along for my region. If I have trouble with ID I’ll do my best to grab a photo and then compare with more detailed ID books at home.
- water bottle
- snacks
- camera with telephoto lens (more on this in a later blog)
- Write-in-the rain notebook and a pencil (I like pencils because they don’t smear or freeze)
- Phone with bird ID apps
- map of location
- First-aid kit
- Small survival kit (more on this in a later blog)
- Extra clothing layer – I usually pack my rain jacket as an extra layer
And everything goes in the daypack. I like the Exped 25 day pack.
You’ll notice I don’t have binoculars on my list – these shouldn’t be IN your pack. It’s assumed they are around your neck and ready to go.
